RIHANNA is the hardest working woman in music right now.

She’s had a relentless run of hits - 17 Top 10 singles in Australia since 2005 and four No.1s in the past year alone.

Where most pop artists fear overexposure, Rihanna has not taken a break since her first hit, producing an album a year, making countless cameos on other people’s singles and touring regularly.

Last night’s sell out show at Rod Laver Arena coincides with Rihanna having the most popular song in the country right now, the controversial S&M, where she sings "sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me."

The Barbadian's barely-there outfit for S&M, a skin-tight PVC dress with a see-through G-string, highlighted one of the show’s most exploited props - her backside. Two dancers literally wave whips and chains wearing flesh colored bodystockings and little else.

And in case you missed the metaphor, Rihanna straddled a pink cannon for Hard. There was also some girl-on-girl action for Ti Amo and plenty of stripper-esque dance moves.

Yes, a Rihanna show is not for prudes. Some would say with all the racy costumes, crotch grabbing and sexually-charged lyrics about male, er, performance and girth, it’s not a show for young kids either, but that’s a parental choice - there were plenty of teens and pre-teens in the house.

Watching kids under 10 (and there were plenty of them) sing along to lyrics like "sex in the air, I love the smell of it" or "meet me in the boudoir, make my body say aaah aaah aaah" or "come here rude boy can you get it up" was kind of creepy.

Before S&M, Rihanna told the crowd, "I want you to sing every word." However, often she didn't return the favour.

Her Australian shows have started an online debate about how much of the concerts Rihanna actually sings.

While there’s plenty of points where she’s obviously singing live - breathless and letting the over-worked backing singers and rabid crowd fill in the gaps - some moments sound suspiciously like she’s singing over her own pre-recorded vocals – a trick employed in many pop concerts.

At least Rihanna doesn’t phone-in her live shows, genuinely interacting with her fans, and she can already do a greatest hits set with killer singles Don’t Stop the Music, Only Girl in the World, SOS, What’s My Name, Rude Boy, Shut Up and Drive, Disturbia and Umbrella mixing with ballads Love the Way You Lie, Take a Bow and Unfaithful.

Strangely, Australia got a one-off reprise of last year’s Last Girl on Earth tour, which Rihanna stopped touring last August.

Her Loud tour starts overseas in June. At times the show felt a little rusty and focussed on previous album Rated R, although a handful of Loud singles had been shoehorned into the old setlist.

Rihanna’s final Melbourne show is a Rod Laver Arena tonight.

You may have seen Rihanna bare it all for her music videos before, but this one has come with a difference, with the pop star reportedly drawing negative reaction from the media with the promotional shoot of her latest music album. The album has already hit stands and two singles from Rihanna’s latest music album ‘Loud’ are currently at the top of US and UK music charts. That, however, does not mean that Rihanna has put a halt to the promotional work of ‘Loud’.

In fact, it is her album covers, which have drawn the ire of several sections of the society. In one of the risqué photos, Rihanna is shown baring her legs to the camera, with only a pink rose to cover the private parts of her body.

The irony in the entire situation is that the same Rihanna had said not so long ago in the past that she had inhibitions shedding her clothes for the camera and would never do so if it meant only money for her. Looks like, she got more than money after the photo shoot for the ‘Loud’ cover.

Another photo, taken as part of the album, shows the pop star crawling topless on desert sand, while her arms are strategically placed to cover her assets, as wind blows her short garment up to expose her back, in a manner which is more than provocative.

And the couple couldn’t keep their hands off each other at the Chateaubriand restaurant, following the designer’s Spring/Summer 2011 show during Paris Fashion Week.

The fiery red head and her beau sipped on champagne as they gazed into each other’s eyes at the private party.

The Bajan beauty had popped over to France from London for the climax of Paris Fashion Week, but there was no chance of the singer blending into the front row.

The 22-year-old chose a typically flamboyant multi-coloured dress with white fur stole and ruby high heels as she attended the Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2011 show last night.

Rihanna gave photographers plenty to look at with her plunging neckline and risked the wrath of animal rights campaigners with her fur stole.

The singer is a frequent wearer of fur and is even the subject of a Facebook group called '10,000 People To Get Rihanna To STOP Wearing Fur!'.

While Rihanna was camera-ready in her colourful ensemble, her boyfriend, baseball player Matt Kemp, kept his distance from the paparazzi.

REVOLVER: I’VE JUST had my biannual look at what’s in the singles charts. Goodness, it’s all looking very strange these days. Yes I was aware of the existence of David Guetta and Tinie Tempah – but when did they set up camp at the business end of the charts? And about 50 per cent of all the singles seem to have a “featuring” credit: last week’s Top 10 had Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg, Eminem featuring Rihanna, B.O.B. featuring Hayley Williams, Tinie Tempah featuring Labrinth (one of the worst songs you’ll ever hear), Usher featuring will.i.am, Kelly Rowland featuring David Guetta, and so on.

The “featuring” nonsense is something that’s always been around, but the record companies have made it de rigueur over the past 18 months. A lot of new artists need either a lift-up from a bigger name or a dance-floor remix before their single is allowed see the light of day. The bonus is that you’re appealing to two fan bases and can always put the resulting hit on two albums.
You’ll have noticed that all the “featuring” singles come from the urban/rap/pop/dance end of the musical spectrum. This is because the singles charts have now atrophied to the extent that these are the only genres being released in the 45rpm format. Something of a record was set in the UK charts two weeks ago, when the entire top 10 consisted of urban acts.

Even if you cast your net to the wilds of the Top 40, you find two rock singles – by the virtually unknown bands Train and The Pretty Reckless.

You simply won’t hear a guitar sound in the charts or on daytime radio these days. The beauty of the dominance of urban/pop/dance for the labels is that because of Pro Tools and the copious technology available in the modern studio, you really just need a figurehead to front the enterprise. They’re invariably young, have a certain Top Shop look, and because they wouldn’t know a musical instrument if they were banged around the head with it, they’re not going to be asking awkward questions during the recording process – just shove them into the vocal booth with a bottle of Sunny Delight and a packet of Wotsits and let the laptop do the bleepy bits.

The lack of variety is having a knock-on effect. Many dedicated rock music radio stations are reporting that they’re having to scour foreign markets to find something vaguely rockish for their playlists.

On a medium- to long-term basis, the constriction of the charts to a single genre is damaging album sales – and remember singles are released as loss leaders for albums.

Guitar bands sell a lot more albums than urban acts (there are exceptions, but not many) and so many of today’s urban acts just get one or two of their singles downloaded before they are chucked into the dustbin with their overstock being used as landfill.

And the gap between who’s in the singles chart and who’s headlining the major music festivals has never been so wide – at the moment it’s like two different worlds.

The problem with Tinie Tempah and his ilk is that you may you able to squeeze out a few hit singles, but the live show is going to be a disaster. Apart from the Jay-Zs, it’s a very rare thing indeed to see an urban act headlining a big festival. Even Eminem has problems getting a good live show together.

On the other hand, if you put a Springsteen and an E Street band into a big field, at least you can see what instruments are being played rather than just hearing a bunch of DAT tapes with supposedly “live” vocals thrown on top.

Which is not to say that urban music is without its merits – some of the best songs from the past 10 years have emerged from the genre – but simply because of its composition process and the software used to make it palatable for daytime radio trends (sound compression and so on) – it doesn’t readily transfer from the studio to the stage.

No, we don’t want Ocean Colour Scene, but we don’t want Tinie bloody Tempah or the plasticine dance of David Guetta – or the “funky beats” of a Dan Deacon either, for that matter. There must be a third way.

Rihanna and Matt Kemp have kept their romance under the radar so far, and Kemp is reportedly planning a similarly laid-back birthday party for the singer's 22nd.

Rihanna is ready to blow out the candles on the craziest year of her life.

The pop princess, who turns 22 on Saturday, Feb. 20, will spend her birthday evening at a "private and intimate" bash thrown by her boyfriend, L.A. Dodger Matt Kemp, sources tell E! News.

It's a far cry from last year, when a splashy 21st birthday bash planned by her record label was cancelled after she was attacked by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Rihanna retreated from the spotlight and went on a movie date with friends to celebrate the milestone.

So what does Kemp have planned for the birthday girl?

"(Matt) really wanted to do something nice for Rihanna this year since she didn't have much of a 21st birthday last year," a source told E! News. The "small get-together" will reportedly include the couple's "closest friends, good Jamaican food, a photo booth, dancing and a nice cake."

The soiree is said to be taking place at a private home in Phoenix, where Kemp is staying during spring training.

Sounds like a nice treat for a gal who definitely deserves it!

On Monday's Ellen DeGeneres Show, she reveals how many tattoos she actually has.

"Approximately 13," she says.

Her latest one is across her chest.

"It reads, 'Never a failure always a lesson,'" says the singer, 21, who split with Chris Brown last year after he violently beat her. "It's basically saying that it's ok to make a mistake, just don't make them twice."

Rihanna says she got the tattoo backwards so she can read it "in the mirror to myself."

Rihanna is now expected to attend the 2010 edition of the event, which will take place in Los Angeles Sunday.

I can’t count the number of times travelers who asked me: ‘Should I wear sneakers in Paris?’ and other variations of the same question. American tourists especially are concerned about ‘not fitting in’ with inappropriate shoes.

That attitude is remarkable indeed. Dressing so as not to shock the sensitivity of the locals: how much more considerate can you get? I can only give kudos to all of you who ever asked the question or thought about it!

Parisians and sneakers

Many first-time visitors to France and Paris are convinced that all French women are picture-perfect fashionistas. This is vastly exaggerated, even though access to stylish clothing and everything fashion is easy in Paris where ‘Elle’ magazine still dictates what’s in and out.

Yet I don’t find such a big difference in perennial tastes in the streets of Paris and in New-York avenues. Even though variations do exist, leading brands are international in nature, and they are imitated everywhere. Globalization and imitations tend to homogenize fashion, making everyday wear look similar in large cities like Paris, London, Milan, and NYC.

But the question about sneakers remains valid. Sneakers have become such a commodity in the US, how is it in Paris?

At first glance, I would venture there is hardly as many women wearing sneakers in Paris as in New York during the work week. The generally accepted business dress code in France looks down on sneakers. Therefore, unless her employer cultivates a younger, sporty image, the Parisian woman wears discreet-looking city shoes to go to work.

Yet sneakers are the ‘it’ shoe when they become design icons. Adidas, Puma and Nike each have their own stores in Paris, where dozens of different models are on display. Judging by the crowds these shops attract, none of these brands suffer from popularity deficit disorder in Paris.

So what’s the major difference in shoe-attitude between the American female consumer and the French female consumer? The latter will wear sneakers as design items, not as workaday shoes. She won’t buy sneakers for comfort. She will buy sneakers if they compliment dress-down pants and make them look smarter. She will buy sneakers which make her feet look thin, small, and classy.

A mere glance at the types of sneakers most commonly seen on women’s feet in Paris is telling: you won’t see any wide, cushy, comfy-looking, plain vanilla sneakers. You will see small, thin-looking, flat-sole, designer sneakers.

For the very same reasons, a pair of ‘escarpins’ by Stephane Kelian or Prada will always be favored over a pair of Pumas. Shoes are a fashion statement, and the more understated it is, the better.

And that’s another major difference between French and American woman. Understatement is a cardinal rule in French fashion. Anything that is too visible is considered garish. This is why the French little black dress is such a fashion icon, and why Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly will always be remembered as ‘the’ American fashionable ladies.

Tourists and sneakers

Does all this mean you can’t wear sneakers when you travel to Paris? Of course not!

First of all, sneakers can be comfortable walking shoes. And walk you will, in Paris. The very best way to discover the city is to walk along its streets. Wearing shoes in which you feel comfortable walking 10 miles a day at a leisurely pace is a majorly important decision for the general mood of your stay in the French capital.

Do not back off from wearing sneakers if these are your best walking shoes. And if you have even better walking shoes, pack them, even if they make you look like you are on a trekking trip!

Frankly, you should not ask yourself this question. Who cares about how you look in the street? Don’t be self-conscious, just be comfortable in your shoes. You are a visitor, these are your vacations, this is your very own time! Jeans and sneakers are international. People won’t be offended by your looks. Unless you dress in pink tops and electric blue pants, with golden sneakers and Jackie-O shades, nobody around will have any second thoughts about your attire.

And if they ever notice your jeans, LL Bean trekking shoes, and Patagonia jacket, well, push come to shove, they might think you’re American. And so what? In all likelihood they will appreciate your visiting Paris.

Restaurants and sneakers

Now, does it mean you can wear sneakers everywhere, on any and every occasion? Probably not.

Restaurants are a case in point. Can you dine out in sneakers?

Say, you are strolling along in your casual jeans and comfortable Lands End boots. It’s now dinner time, and you are looking for an enticing restaurant. There is it! The menu displayed outside is appetizing, prices are reasonably expensive, the place is not too crowded... but guests are dressed smartly. Will they let you in? Will you fit in?

I have yet to see in Paris a door sign indicating ‘No Sneakers Allowed In’. True, some high-brow places will expertly leave you at bay: “Do you have a reservation? Sorry, we are full tonight”. But generally speaking, no restaurant will refuse to seat you because you wear sneakers.

The right question is therefore not ‘Will they allow me in?’, but ‘Will you feel comfortable entering a dressy place in sneakers?’ I daresay probably not. And being self-conscious is not the best way to enjoy your meal. Your attention should be in your plate and on your food, not on your shoes and attire.

So my practical rule is ‘Dress according to the place you go to’. If you plan to dine out at expensive, dressy restaurants when you are in Paris, just pack your Pradas. Even better: visit Stephane Kelian’s and Robert Clergerie’s boutiques in Paris, and buy yourself great-looking footwear by these typically Parisian designers.
Other places and sneakers

There are other places where sneakers just won’t cut it.

The Opera House is definitely one of them. But who would be so foolish as not to dress up for opera night? The sneaker point is moot.

What about a cabaret? I would say it is much better to dress up when you have dinner at a cabaret like ‘Moulin Rouge’, ‘Lido’, and ‘Paradis Latin’. Though only the stage is well lit in these places, the fact is people around you will usually be dressed up. You will feel much more comfortable in some more formal wear.

How about the boats on the Seine? If you are boarding a boat for a dinner cruise, don’t wear sneakers. This is a romantic experience, you will want to make the most of it. An evening dress is ‘de rigueur’. On the other hand, if you simply want to cruise up and down the stream, sneakers are fine.

Museums? Forget style, wear very comfortable shoes. Nobody will look at your shoes, art is on the walls. But walking down the Louvre galleries is a tiring experience: so much too see, so many galleries, so slow the pace. The good doctor’s advice: go with cushion and comfort.

Art gallery ‘vernissages’? Style is your cue. Art galleries are small, vernissage evenings are short. Evening dress, black preferably, nothing flashy, and good-looking design shoes. No sneakers.

Wrap-up

Dress according to the place you go to. If in doubt, call in advance to understand the dress code. Pack up a nice pair of shoes, or buy some when you are in Paris. Bring a nice, understated evening dress.

But don’t shy away from sneakers for any not-so-formal occasion. Wear them in the street with no shame. You will blend in without any problem if you wear jeans and a pair of sneakers. Nike is an American brand, and it is very popular in France. Levi’s, Diesel, Wrangler, and Calvin Klein are American brands, and they rule the jeans world in France too.

So be comfortable in your sneakers, and enjoy the view.
